The Lone Ranger - disappointing box office results
The new Disney production is expected to make the studio lose more than $150m.
The $250m vigilante western is a reworking of the 1930s radio series with Armie Hammer as the title character and Johnny Depp as his Native American sidekick Tonto.
Negative reviews affected the film and Depp’s quirky take on Tonto was harshly criticized because it only serves to unbalance its dynamic.
This could be the most disappointing production for Disney since last year’s space fantasy John Carter, which lost more than $200m. The advantage of Disney in the box office is given by the Pixar prequel Monsters University and Marvel superhero sequel Iron Man 3. The Hollywood Reported estimated that the movie will earn around $275m by the time it finishes its run.
“Everything was perfect on paper, so today was incredibly frustrating." said Disney chief Dave Hollis. The Lone Ranger was released in the same day as the rival studio Universal Pictures' animated sequel Despicable Me 2, which is predicted to earn over $1bn worldwide.
