Beauty Myths EXPOSED

Does drinking lots of water lead to perfect skin? Does chocolate give you blemishes? We've all heard these outrageous claims but are they actually true? The 30 Days team set out to debunk these common beauty myths, and expose the truth behind perfect skin.

Myth: Drinking coffee will dry out your skin
Verdict: True
The truth: Pick-me-up drinks such as coffee and some soft drinks contain high levels of caffeine which can constrict your blood vessels, allowing less fluid to pass through your skin. Typically, this means your skin will become dehydrated and leave you with eye wrinkling, shriveled lips and flaky skin.

Myth: The thicker the cream, the better it hydrates
Verdict: False
The truth: The more you layer your face with moisturizer doesn't necessarily mean you will increase your skin's hydration. Heavy creams can create a barrier on the surface of the skin and prevent your skin from absorbing natural moistures. Instead, try a lightweight product that contains all-natural ingredients.

Myth: Eating junk food will affect your skin
Verdict: True
The truth: Dermatologists have been arguing over this topic for many years, but most now agree that there is a connection between diet and skin quality. Studies have shown that carbohydrates and sugar can cause insulin levels to skyrocket, increasing the oil production in your skin. So next time you have a burger urge, think about your skin and opt for fruits, vegetables and a lean protein instead.

Myth: Breakouts are caused solely by oily skin
Verdict: False
The truth: Oily skin is not always the reason behind skin breakouts. Acne can be a result of hormones, skin sensitivity or an unbalanced diet. And if you've tried every product under the sun, that's not the right way to go about treating acne either. Purchase an organic skin cleanser, eat healthily, exercise and only wear mineral-based make-up. You should be seeing the difference in just days!

Myth: Pores are shrinkable
Verdict: True
The truth: Those annoying little dots on your face can be easily reduced to appear less visible.

Pores tend to swell when engorged with oil, so simply cleansing your face twice daily will reduce the oils. Using a daily wash with glycolic or salicylic acid will help control the oil and your pores will start to look lighter and less stretched.
